Another point - no, you can't really get any hip snap power from a layback position - but you should have alresy applied the righting action BEFORE that (whether spread throughout sweep - or more at once with more "snap"). The layback is just the finish position. It serves to keep your COG close to the hull so it can pull you up more easily instead of you blowing it by pulling the kayak back over on you.
