Seats

My main problem in using my kayak is that after 45 minutes to an hour my “backside” is hurting so much that I have to get out and walk around. I am 6 foot, 285 lbs and have an artificial knee. I know losing some weight would help! But in the mean time, ideas?!?! I use a gel yakpad with my regular seat.

Thanks,

Coach Hale

You didn’t mention
what you paddle (SOT or SINK). Here’s one option for a sit-in-kayak.

Get a canoe and get…
used to kneeling in it. This will help your control and save your back.

Don’t Slouch!
Sit with as straight a back as possible, resist any urge to slouch.

And as you make each paddle stroke, push your foot against that side’s footrest; that will help with circulation.

conditioning
I would do whatever general conditioning exercises that you can do, like sit ups, push ups, leg lifts and anything else you can think of, but what is probably going to do the most is lots and lots of time in the seat. We all have to pay our dues to toughen up and it takes time.

if its just your rear end
A pad is probably fine. You can buy a cheap yoga mat and cut it to fit. That way you can try it out without committing to something more expensive.

Cush seat
I just brought in and am typing this while enjoying the Cloud10 seat pad on my wooden desk seat.

I had brought in the seat pads (along with some kayak Overseats) thinking one would go into my race kayak but I think I’ll have to pinch another just for my desk seat.

hmmm, thanks
Nice product selection, even a backband. Do you know how the seat cushions would fasten to a composite bucket?

Pics
I’ll put some pics up on the blog tomorrow.
