Shark Bait, Baby!!!

8 great whites sighted off of Cape Cod in one day earlier this week… Seems they are very present.

Dude was boogie boarding. From an audio clip of a bystander, sounds like he was hit just as he was kicking to catch a wave, or was kicking because he got hit, then lots of thrashing water.
I’d be leery of butt boating, I’m more inclined to think a sup board offers a better vantage point, but boogie boarding seems to put you at quite a disadvantage.
I’ve been a little leery about being out in the sea kayaks, they’re 16 to 18 feet long, but still narrow and low in the water. Might be time to take up sailing.
I am friendly with a sup surfer who frequents Nantasket, he is the guy who got knocked off his board last summer by a great white. He had the presence of mind to calmly go over to a surf school instructor, and quietly warn him about the incident, to get his students out of the water.

Heard that on the news while driving home after paddling Lake Michigan and immediately thought of the surfers here, hoping none were playing at the cape.

Very sad. Every surfer knows it can happen. They seem most at risk. The perfect surf becomes the lure.

Nick a femeral and your chances are very slim to none.

From the first hand reports, It seemed that he had passed out and went quick. For me, a quick death is a sort of grace.

Talk today about losing some of the Cape seal population to increase disinterest by the sharks. The hard way. This will become a challenging debate.

Yup. Alot of talk about “Australian” type approaches to protecting swimmers, and/or culling sharks and/or seals. None of these approaches have proven to be 100% protective and can be costly to use. But, economic lifeblood of the Cape is based on tourism. I assume something will be done and publicized, regardless of effectiveness, to reassure the visitors.

A Cape surfer was saying, “Regardless, (after all is said or done or not), he still going to paddle out and surf.”

Ditto for me, but not down the Cape… Mostly because I hate surfing with crowds of people more than anything.

Soul searching before soul surfing down along the outer Cape…

Seems logical to have second thoughts, but a really tough situation for the surf shops.

Yes even though shark attacks are rare who wants to risk it when you see 10 sharks after getting out, or surfed the same spot as the fatal attack.

Bring on winter. Send 'em back down to warmer waters soon.

Several weeks ago, a seal popped out about 50 feet from me on a gray misty dawn patrol. Just me and the seal at the break. I swear that the Jaws music started playing in my head…
