Show off your boat ... let's see pics!

How does your Fujita compare on the water with the Quest 150? I’ve got the earlier Quest 135 (yellow like yours – I named it Chiquita because it resembles a banana) and really like it.

The Fujita looks a lot like my Feathercrafts – which frame version does yours have?

Hi willowleaf, Yes I decided on the Quest 150 after seeing your 135!
The Fujita being shorter at 4m isn’t as fast as the 4.55m Quest 150 but tracks just as well. It’s an aluminium frame with aramid reinforced hull (similar in design to the Nautiraid 325) and weighs only 12kg, sets up a bit more easily and faster than the Quest 150 which is why I decided to get it for shorter expeditions and fun paddles.

Looks like the Oru Coast XT. Another folding kayak.

By the way my friend Simon Creasey also has a Quest 135! He’s originally from New Zealand and now lives here in Singapore. The Fujita is his which he bought used about 10 years ago and now I’m buying it from him! It’s still in great condition as he really takes care of his kayaks and it’s really well made as well.

It’s an old Walker Bay Airis Play. She ain’t fast and wanders a bit, but she’s unsinkable and weighs EIGHTEEN POUNDS. I can one-arm carry from parking spot half a mile away. Drop stitch hull and floor (6.5-7lbs). 8.5ft long

Here’s my new Petrel Play custom built by Jim Tomes of Danvers MA, USA. Cedar and mahogany strip, with Jim’s own skeg design. Weighs 32 pounds, fast and lively in the ocean and inland. Jim builds fast race boats and makes super light Greenland paddles.

my boat, not me paddling though…

ended up buying a new canoe at slalom Nationals, which was not the idea at all. Friend Jeff drove out with 3 boats, I flew and was going to borrow one of them. But he hated his newish boat and wound up paddling the other solo boat. I too hated the little flippy newish boat. So borrowed a display boat from Empty Canoes, had 2 bad runs with it. After the swim the boat was unmanageable with the amount of water on board, lost it and it pinned. Small crack from that, patched. Then had a bad run on Big Drop and t-boned a rock in Little Drop, punched a dent into the front of the boat.
At that point I felt morally obliged to buy the thing… marked down to 1500 from 2800 so I could not whine publicly.

On the plus side, it’s a 45lb hull based on the old Dagger Caption, fast and stiff, a good touring and whitewater boat. Jeff paddled this instead his solo in the race and liked it a lot. Also loaned it to one of the women for the W 13ft and up class, she made it look good.

Yes, Simon and I have communicated often over the years, mainly in the now defunct Folding Kayaks forum (foldingkayaks.org). He was a great help in coaching me through assembly with my Quest and on the modifications it needed to lower the seat (I had one of the early “beta” models where they had made a mistake in the frame set up that placed the seat too high for stability.) He might be amused to hear that I helped convince you to buy his. I think you will love it.

The Quest in my opinion is the best value of any folding kayak currently on the market. Well designed, quality materials, comfortable, great performance and wonderful lightness and packability for traveling.

I forgot to mention, I noticed in your photos that you use a Greenland paddle with your folders, like I do! I find that the perfect combination.

How is the Chelan? I went with the Sea Eagle Explorer.

The Explorer also has a drop stitch floor. I found an old Sea Eagle catalog on ebay with pictures of it. In the catalog it shows the old Explorer having a soft floor more like the cheap 330 and 370. They’ve been updated at least 2 or 3 times since that book came out and the boats are much better. Even with the skeg, the Explorer doesn’t track as straight as I’d like, and it does take some muscle in some conditions.

Dogs love their boat rides.

Some dogs. My daughter’s Datsuns are scaredy dogs. They hate the water, but then how cam you blsme them, their bellies drag in water if you knock over a glass on the floor.

I still want to know, what came first, the dogs or the auto maker.

Giacomo likes the beach also and swims well. Take PFD off him and let him swim for practice under my supervision. He’s all muscle :muscle: even though he looks chubby. His ribs are just below his skin

Lastest addition to the fleet. ~20 year Necky Eliza. It will be one of the surf replacements for my Gemini. The black Valley Gemini will have a new home, next week. Played with it in small/moderate surf last weekend, at it has too much volume for my body.

Wow! What a small world and a wonderful community we have!!
I actually am now exclusively using a 2pc Aleutian paddle made by Anders Thygesen of Kajakkspesialisten / Norwegian Wood. I find it the perfect paddle for me and even easier to use than a Greenland paddle as it doesn’t need to be canted.
P.S. Actually he still has his Quest 135. I bought the 150 new and his used Fujita.
