I appreciate the picture and explanation. I’ve never thought of that or seen it done, but there are places where this could be (almost) a life saver. I’ll try it next chance I get.

My friend Steve M. has a yellow Hurricane Tracer. We had it out on Ft Peck Lakes for over a week just recently, along with my Rebel Jara. I am rather impressed with the Tracer, and I personally think Hurricane screwed up when they dropped it.

Gasp!

There’s a few more like that. I’ll post over the next few days.

I did,

No price listed

I started to fret tech was busted. Works on my end. Price is there $7395

Love mine (158), thanks Marshall (except for the forward small hatch).

Just got back from my weekly long paddle (only 30mi this week).
Easy walk to the water. Return trip a little harder 'cause I’m a bit tired (round trip to water: 1/4 mile) - kayak (36lb) and about 10lb of gear.

I neither want nor can afford this one, but I can paddle past it.

I probably posted this kayak when I first snagged it for $300 from a local guy clearing out his barn 3 years ago, but I feel like it deserves a an update now that I have used this miraculous craft for a while. I love it even more after experiencing several challenging open water outings on the Maine coast last week, including one where we stayed out too long and had to fight our way back to the launch paddling for 90 straight minutes against 12 knot winds gusting to 28 knots and short period whitecaps up to 2’. Really glad I was using a GP in that wind. Yes, GP skeptics, you CAN make great headway against the force of wind and water with a well crafted skinny stick.

This vintage Perception Avatar 16 (from 2004 – a 48 pound Brent Reitz skegged low volume design they only made in composite for 2 years) is not only the most comfortable all-day boat in my fleet, it is fast, tracks like an arrow, easy to maneuver and edge and sustains in dicey conditions like it was made out of cork. Got some scars but the fade paint job (with metal flake!) still impresses. The shot was more typical of the conditions we had for our outings later in the week.

If you ever find one of these for sale and you are a mid sized paddler who wants a bombproof kayak for open water and conditions, snap it up. I am sorely tempted by a guy a few hours from me who has been trying to sell one identical to mine, but in pristine condition, for over a year.

Curious how far you had to paddle to get to the launch.

it was a bit over 2 miles but the worst of the wind was at about 1.6 miles to go, all but the last 1/10th mile (when we turned 180 degrees into the cove) was paddling directly into wind so strong it whistled in my ears. If you paused a stroke you would start to be pushed back. Had it been high tide we could have cut out the last 30 minutes of struggle by cutting across a drowned reef directly into the launch beach. But the other person I was paddling with didn’t wan to “ruin” her kayak by beaching it on sand and small gravel and carrying it over the low tide exposed rocky reef – I am too conditioned to guide ethics to have taken that option myself and left her to round the peninsular headland through the rock-smashing breakers on her own. We landed just as the skies went extra dark and the rain and thunder started.
