skeg kits

I’d like to install a skeg on my C-trek. I know I can order one from Onno, and there is the hydro Kari-tek skeg. Are there any other choices out there? (a little cheaper maybe) How do you determine were to put the skeg/does it mater? (besides the fact it needs to stay in the water) thanks

if you are handy with fibreglass
and don’t mind tinkering a bit you can make one yourself.

I retrofitted a ruddered sea kayak.

If you’re comfortable with the tools & materials you’ll need to actually cut a hole in your boat and install a skeg, then fabricating your on skeg should be considered. There are several builder’s photo-logs on the web providing several options.

For determining the optimal size and location for a skeg, consider building a simple mock-up using rubber bands/straps to secure it in place. Use a material for the skeg that can easily be trimmed to determine a good size & play w/ the placement to see the different effects.

Retractable is the way to go.
