Skirting around: Stuff I didn't know

My Seals Rand skirt is easier to close/open than the nylon with bungees. I’ve never had trouble getting out . It may be specific to the person and the boat.

I’ve only used a skirt with bungee when given a skirt for test paddling boats. The rest of the time I’ve used my randed skirt on a composite boat, and have never had an issue either. I’m a strong guy though, so “minor difficulty” getting it on might be a no go for others. It comes off quickly and easily while upside down.

Thanks. Hadn’t seen this before. Interesting read.

I’ll second that. So now I’m leaning toward bungee. There’s a good chance it will fit both boats, which is a bonus for me.

Early spring first paddle, thought I had forgotten my skirt, borrowed my buddy’s extra randed skirt to use on my composite boat. Did an hour or so paddle, got back to the launch, and while trying to get the skirt off, separated the front part of the coaming while pulling off the skirt. Didn’t pull far enough forward and up. The boat is older and used, so the coaming could have been already partially damaged or comprised, but never had any issues with my regular bungee skirt. Packing things up found my bungee skirt in the front hatch, where I had stashed it the previous fall, just hadn’t looked hard enough to find it. I’d be very careful using a randed skirt on a composite coaming again.
I did just get a Level Six randed skirt to use on my Delphin and ww boat, but haven’t had a chance to get out yet and try it out.
Snap Dragon makes very nice skirts, and I’ve had great luck with the Seals brand as well.

My Snap Dragon OC worked excellent, it always dropped in place real well in the back and one hand snapped the cockpit closed. . Over time the deck fabric wicked in water. The tunnel has “shrunk” :o with age for some reason. I might grow back into it but I’m not holding my breath. I have been making tuiitsoq for several years and use them exclusively now. They require some two hand manipulation to close up. Attach with bungee. I have never imploded or had a detachment. I like them on the OC but I never did one on a keyhole.

I spray some water proofing on my neo skirts from time to time.

Well it says that generally a rand is preferred for white white/extreme conditions, BUT there are exceptions for boats with odd cockpit shapes.
