SLATE ISLANDS

WE ARE PLANNING A TRIP TO THE SLATE ISLANDS IN JULY AND WOULD LIKE TO CONVERSE WITH FELLOW PADDLERS WHO HAVE VISITED THE SLATES

Slate Islands
I have never been there myself, but thoroughly enjoyed reading two trip reports published in the newsletter of the Great Lakes Sea Kayaking Association. They certainly encourage one to consider going!

Looking at the preview of this message I am not sure the links below properly include the #fourth and #fifth as part of the link as they come up on the screen. Modify your url manually to include that as part of the address if the links don’t quite work properly.

I was there last year
launched from Terrace Bay, about an eight mile paddle to the islands. We stayed in Mcgreavy harbour which has a few nice camp sites. Be sure to check out the lighthouse. The woodland caribou are awesome. Here’s a picture of one down by the water:

On the downside, you can smell the pulp mill and hear the train whistle from the mainland if the wind is blowing in the right (wrong) direction. But, it is still a great destination.

The highlight of the trip for me was paddling around all of the Slate Islands and playing in the rebounding waves which were not real big-but still fun.

There is a shuttle service if you need one.
