What Salty Said
"Trucks are so useful."
At my house, mama drives the four door car that you’d take another couple to a resaurant in. A Maxima. I drive the truck that hauls the Christmas tree or the kayaks or the bikes or the furniture or the…
Trucks have back seats now so don’t rule them out.

Tacoma
My brother has a 2007 doublecab Tacoma and loves it. I have a 2002 Prerunner xtracab and love it. Lots of options for carrying Kayaks and canoes.
Ok…I will wade in just ankle deep …
Ford Edge.
Small sized. Crossover. Easy to park. Easy to drive. Smooth ride. 265hp. 'Course, I got AWD, NAV, Leather, Vista Roof (kids love it), etc etc.
Don’t know how it will do in snow for some months, but roof height is lower than CRV, Escape, etc and its a mighty fine choice for me after my lifted F150 4x4.
2008 CRV was my (very close) second choice. Subarus ---- well, just can’t stomach station wagons I am afraid!! (my parents always had one to haul us kids)
Got mine in “Derek Jeter” Burnt Orange - my three yr old calls it my “carrot car”. Oh well…

For off-roading, sure. Otherwise awd is almost always a safe bet, people won’t forget to use it until it’s too late, and the system in a swtchable system almost always weighs the same as or more than dedicated awd systems.
The things I think subaru has over all other systems are:
- A horizontally opposed engine, which gives the car a low center of gravity, which helps handling and keeps all four wheels engaged better,
- A symmetrical system. Front transaxles are the same length right or left, as are the rears. No torque steer.
The Edge roof rails are…
plastic ,and weak. I know I have a Ford dealer right near me,and grabbed the rails and gave them a yank,to much flex. Someone else here was looking for an SUV ,and nixed the Edge as a kayak/canoe hauler because of the flimsy rails, and I went to the Ford dealer to see for myself if true.Dealer not selling many because this is Toyota country here.
