was wondering if anyone could recomend any type of smoke flare. The ones I’ve seen tend to be a bit large to carry on a kayak.
USCG vs SOLAS
If you get the USCG aproved smoke signals they are smaller but only burn for one minute. The larger ones are the SOLAS approved and are actually for off shore use. These burn for 3-4 minutes depending on the manufacturer. The USCG size should be fine for most kayaking. If you are doing long off shore paddling trips it might be better to carry the SOLAS size.
