Solved: Grip assist for Kayaking with weak grip or tendon issues

These work very well to reduce strain on your fingers when kayaking. I highly recommend them to anyone with grip strength or tendon issues. They are comfortable and effectively transfer the majority of the load from your fingers to arms.

Will they help with canoeing? Would you be able to twist your wrist for a J-stroke?

I dont think these would work well for canoeing for a couple reasons -

  1. Your top hand would have trouble with the grip. Maybe a T grip could possibly work, but a molded palm grip almost certainly would not.

  2. To switch sides, the shaft would have to come towards you to release from the hook, which is not a natural motion.

So in general I would say these work much better for Kayaking since your hands remain stationary on the paddle.

My tendon issues went away immediately when I switched to a bent shaft paddle.

I use a palm grip so it does not look like a good solution for me.
Thanks for the input.

These are just like lifting hooks for in the gym. I started using them a while back in the gym and immediately moved my wrist issues up to my elbows. Better off just loosening your grip as much as possible or opening up your offside hand.

“Loosening the grip” isnt the remedy here (for me at least). I have seen no trickle down problems affecting other joints (elbow, shoulder). Ymmv.
