Does anybody have any recent information on the South Fowl Lake Portage? (BWCA) Hoping to do a Crane Lake to the Grand Portage trip starting next week. Any information on difficult portages on the east end of the trip would be more than welcome.
easy
Fowl Portage, from south Fowl Lake around falls and rapidis to the Pigeon River, is an easy one. It is a mile ling, but I recall being amazed at how easy it was. Before you get there, however, is Long Portage between Rose and Rove Lakes. This one has a bad reputation. It starts out easy on an old rail grade, but really goes to hell the eastern half, especially when it has been very wet or early in the season. Things might have improved a bit since I was last on it(1970s) as the Border Lakes Trail now uses part of it.
Considering how far you will travel on this route, the portages are easy.
Portage
Heard it rumored that the big storm with the blow down has increased the time of this portage 8 fold. Appreciate any recent information but it sounds like being a high school might have been the best prerequisite for this.

Not sure if it will have recent information, but worth a shot.
