Hi have a old peakuk original sprsy deck that has satered to stick the my boat due to the bit that actually touches the boat meleting is there anything i can put in the deck or kayak to stop it from melting and therefore stop sticking
Sou.nds like it needs to be binned. Not likely repairable.
Time for a new sprayskirt
Must be a really old one, or maybe it was stored somewhere it got exposed to solvent fumes? This can be the fate of gear that gets left in car boots and garages where heat and vapors from oily rags or other debris degrade the materials.
I’ve got a couple of PeakUK skirts and so far have found they hold up better than other skirts I have had over the decades. Once neoprene or any other rubber-based fabric starts to get tacky, it’s usually not salvageable. As a last chance option before discarding it, you might try painting the sticky bits with a layer or two of one of the stretchy liquid coatings that are marketed on our “New World” side of the Pond as “FlexSeal”.
If it was my skirt, because I have sewn and repaired my own gear my whole life and I use vintage manual treadle Singer sewing machines (that could honestly stitch through a wooden 2" by 4" if needed), I would probably cut off the offending cockpit rand and sew on a new one, either a band of stretch neoprene or a nylon or dacron fabric tunnel through which I would draw a length of 6 mm bungee elastic cord (same as used for kayak deck rigging) with a sturdy knot at the stern end.
If you lack the tools and sewing expertise for such a project, it used to be possible to find shoemakers or other fix-it shops that repair footwear and luggage who will do such oddball repairs if you provide the materials and a sketch. But you have to weigh the expense for that against the cost of a 50 to 100 quid new skirt.
