Patty is short for Patrick.
Paddy is short for Padraig.
I took the easy out by just following the lead of my South Boston Irish friends on which to use.
FYI. I did wonder about “Patty” vs “Paddy” and found this:

Well it’s usually patties in most places.
But in some parts of New England, I’ve even heard it’s “grinders.” --Guess it depends whether it’s genuine corned beef or not…
