suggest a rec sized kayak

Suggestions please…next Spring Sho-me and I will do a section of the Jacks Fork and Current River in my quest of the NP system units.

I’m covered on long sea kayaks but I’m thinking that a 12 foot rec. boat is the ticket here? am I thinking right from those who’ve paddled camped on these rivers?

So what we are looking for in a rec. boat priority one low weight but can withstand trounces with rocks–also am I right in thinking the Jacks and Current have rocks to hit?

Second consideration is a dry storage area; we will be paddling camping and a bulkhead or even 2 will be nice.

We did a 30 mile section on the Edisto 3 weeks ago and used the long kayaks-they did fine but I’m thinking for this type of river the smaller boats are more desireable…suggestions please and thanks!

go to 14 feet if you can
I have a 14 foot sit on top Bic Scapa that turns very easily. It is faster than most rec boats but turns as well. I’d also look at the WS Pamlico 14 and any other 14 footers that have a flat bottom or lots of rocker. I think a Manitou 14 could be turny if you lean it well.

I’d agree that you should stick with plastic for rock bashing.

MM , a Pungo 120 should work fine
for you unless you have gained 100 lbs since I saw you last. For a little more floatation, a Kestral 120 HV would do it.

I used an Acadia 12’ for many trips in tight spots and it was perfect.

String, thanks
I’ve got an old Acadia that will due, I’ll look at a Pungo in the meantime for my partner…and no to gaining any weight!
