Sunny Monday Sea Kayak Play

Seems like non-stop weekend rain this whole spring. Made some “lemonade” this.morning with 4.5’ plus wind waves in 8 seconds range. Not the best surfing waves so took the Sterling kyak and the Gearlab Aukunak (Greenland style surf paddle). Got a couple of decent rides on the disorganized bumps. But mostly playing around and reaquainting with slower timing of the GP on waves.

Mahalo!

What lighthouse is seen toward the right-center of your second picture?
(I appreciate your photos and positive posts)

Nice! I haven’t surfed with a GP.

That is Graves Light. It’s about 4 miles out from the outer Harbor Islands, on a rocky ledge. It serves as the entrance/exit of the Presidential Road Channel that comes into Boston Harbor proper.

I have never made the paddle out to it, since I am usually soloing and don’t want to take the risk. It’s out in the open and can see some big swell action. Just out of the picture on the left hand side is Brewster Light on Little Brewster Island. That one is about 1.5 miles out. I have paddle out to that since there are nearby islands to bail out to if need arises.

Not so “nice”. I struggle with timing on catching the waves with it because of the slower acceleration. The rudder strokes are a bit different as well from my Euro. I usually am willing to “play” more with it when the waves aren’t as optimal and I don’t feel like am I “giving up” too much in missing waves.

Greedy about good waves…I approve! Yes, the GP is good for lots of things, but it doesn’t seem to lend itself to the amount of control needed in fast moving water like surf.

Fumbling around with the Gearlab Aukanek paddle. It’s wider than any other GP with a 4" blade at the tip but still doesn’t have the grab that I want for surf.

Mahalo!

You know they don’t work…why are you paddling with it and waste a whole session?
