I had a winged central fin on a waveski. I think it was called a Zip fin. Once you got going fast enough, you’d feel the ski sort of vibrate and get quite loose. It was kind of cool but I went back to a regular fin after tearing the zip fin off on some bull kelp. I did surf it as a twin fin for a bit but felt it lacked some drive off the turns without the middle fin.
The paddler is way on the shoulder and nowhere near the pocket on the waves. But not far enough away on the shoulder not to be in the way of surfers who being closer to the pocket have right of way. This sets up the usual conflict between surfers and paddle surfers, that and being able to catch waves very early. I have done both forms of surfing. Paddle surfers will earn respect in the lineup if they are prepared to surf in the pocket otherwise they should find waves to ride well away from the critical and technical parts of the waves.
