This is the Sea 2
Hi

I got my copy of this great film a week ago, and so far I have watched the whole dvd four times plus the plying sequences a lot more:-)

I really like the film, the photography is nice and sharp, the music is cool, and most of the paddling is really cool. My favorite sequences are the ones with playing the Bitches and Penhryn Mawr, I really want to go to Wales soon.

It is more playing on this film than on the first one, but touring fans also get their share with paddling on Lake Michigan, Lofoten in Norway, at Newfoundland and Japan. As a bonus is a film about the expedition around Tasmania included on the dvd.

Order your copy as fast as possible:-)

totally bias report
Hey,

I’m about as bias as you can get, but I do have a bit of a write up in my blog. Go to: http://www.kayakwisconsin.net/2005/11/wonder-stuff.html

For what it’s worth.

Despite having a speaking part
I didn’t appear too foolish.

I just watched my copy last night. Also Justine did a great job of making Lake Michigan look cool! She of course couldn’t make it look as wild as the tidal races of Wales, but she didn’t get a good surf day in, our second day in the video looked a lot bigger in person than it did on camera, it all sort of flattened out. Doug Van Doren came out looking pretty good, but his signature bowling ball roll was not his best take, I’ve seen him get that without any extra support strokes.

pure kayaking porn…
loved every minute of it. thie first one was great but this one is even better.

i give it two paddles up!

in the beginning of the tape…
there is a confused shot…she’s grinning and then some confusion and then you see the side of the boat and it doesn’t seem to be in the water…and then of course lots of water and a roll and after a surprised look, lots of grinning and laughing…

that’s a pop up in north stack…she was on top of and then kinda fell off, a steep wave; the bow buried, the race brought the boat to vertical and then once she plunged to about midships the buoyancy reversed her direction and ALL 18 feet of that boat was spit into the air like a watermelon seed… and then “kerplunk” came down back into the drink. it was remarkable. it cost her a hat but made for pretty cool footage.

that was day one on the water and set the tone for our week in wales training for 5 star…one of the coolest things i’ve ever witnessed in a boat.

Mine just shipped
Brian emailed me today that it’s on its way.

Loved tits 1, just watched it again a few times a couple of days ago.

Andy

Just got it today!
Awsome! MUCH better than the first. Longer and more variety. Sea kayaking on the Bitches and Pewn MahR (SP)is unbelievable. Wracking my brain to figure where around here I can find water like that.

Got to get the skill level up a ways though!

Andy

Best kayak porn yet!
Mine arrived today.

I think it is better than the first. Also seems that there are more non-NDK boats than in the first. Though NDK boats still predominate.

Better shots of the action
I thought the newer one had clearer shots of what the paddlers were actually doing and how the boats reacted than the first, particularly in the section about the Bitches. I was able to see some very good shots of how both of my boats (Vela and Explorer) seemed to react, which was a treat.

New Shipment
We just got another shipment of This is the Sea Two DVD’s today:

Thank you Brent
I got mine from p.net, the set of both TITS and TITS2, and they arrived so fast I was impressed!

Not as good as the first
After watching “This is the Sea 2” a few times and reading the reactions here, I felt compelled to chime in. I was a litle disappointed with this followup to the first film, which I thought was stellar.

Most glaringly, and I don’t mean to be rude, but the music in the second film sucks! Not only does the music not fit the footage as well as it did in the first, but the songs themselves are pretty crappy. I’m hoping all the songs by the band Seven13 were completely free for use in the film, because they’re absolutely horrible. In the first movie, I felt lucky to hear good bands wasn’t familiar with like Rising Girl, Los Burritos, and The Bete Noires. There are no such bands or songs here.

While I appreciated the somewhat improved cinematography of the second film, it felt more overdone and contrived than the first. The three split-screen camera idea was a creative one, but it didn’t pan out well in the film. Looking at three images of someone flawlessly surfing a wave doesn’t really look as neat as it should and the segment is fairly ho-hum. It seems like the shots were shoved in there because there was so much forethought put into the setup that the expense and time had to be justified.

What struck a chord with me in the first film was the backstories and the fascinating people: the humble wunderkind in Maligiaq Padilla, the sickeningly cute coupleness of Shawna Franklin and Leon Somme, the subtle gracefulness of Nigel Foster. I’m sure that everyone in the second film was interesting and had stories to tell, but they didn’t seem to be portrayed there. A few of the interviews even felt forced to the point of drudgery by the interviewee.

Lastly, get over tidal races already! Amazing waves and eddies are great but I’m guessing they’re a lot more interesting if you’re in them. The paddling conditions were good enough, but the visual appeal of the locations in the second movie don’t come close to the first film.

Overall, the film feels like it’s moving more towards ‘whitewater style’ films, with music stuck over paddling footage with little else. Where whitewater films insert adrenalin and effective music though, this film leaves a large void somewhere between the last film and concepts that weren’t totally realized. That said, thanks so much to all the people involved in making the films! Even though I was disappointed with the second film, it’s such an exciting thing to have these types of movies for sea kayaking!
