Anything wrong with just using a regular truck ladder rack to hold canoes? My local Pep Boy has a truck ladder rack on sale for $249 for full-size truck bed (I have a '99 F250 SB Superduty X-cab). It’s not a Thule or Yakima, but won’t it work if I lash the boat down snugly? Does either company make devices to anchor a canoe to a regular rack?

The ladder rack will work if the ladder space is wide enough. Lots of kayak fishermen use them for their kayaks. You may want to check Home Depot, believe they have a ladder rack for under $100. For tying it onto a rack, not much is needed other than good straps or rope. Be sure to use a bow and stern rope.
