two-3 day canoe trip?

-- Last Updated: Jun-11-07 12:30 PM EST --

Im trying to plan a two-3 day canoe trip in early to mid august with my boyfriend. he has never paddled before. im thinking of the namekegon or st. croix rivers. but i am also wondering if anyone knows of a pretty simple round trip that would require little portaging and great scenery as much away from towns as possible.

if anyone could help me out with some suggestions or info, i would greatly appreciate it. thanks!

I think your first choice is excellent.
Otherwise you’ll have to scout the state for a circle of lakes with no portages, not easy to find.

Turtle-Flambeau Flowage
Try the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage. You can put in at Murray’s landing near Mercer and paddle to any one of 195 islands and camp. Camping is in designated spots and free (first-come and first served.) This experience is very close to a boundary waters type experience with no portages. the eastern side of the flowage (from Murray’s landing west) is designated quiet and no residences.

You could also put in on the Manitowish River if you want a river and lake experience. look at my report from last year.

No portages, great river with plenty of sandy beaches. And if I do say so myself, some great P-Netters to paddle with.
