Recently bought a used kayak that has this bolted to the front deck in front of the cockpit. I’ve not seen one before and would appreciate your input on what it is. Thanks in advance!

I have that. It’s a mounting bracket for a Suunto Orca deck compass

Makes sense. It is in the compass recess on the deck.
Gee I should have known I have three of those because I have three of those compasses that failed in short order. Here I am googling the image
