The day after we paddled the Jordan we over to the Sturgeon with Emma & Andrew. I wasn’t sure about running tandem with the new boat there so I took the old standby, the Rendezvous. The Sturgeon is faster, tighter, twistier, and with more wood than the Jordan. It also has a couple of nice (for Michigan) play waves. Another great day with a couple of big groups to dodge.
Last paddling stop on this trip with toml. He can make that solo canoe move. 40 years ago in canoe magazine i used to read about yost boats and wondered how they paddle. Not quite the same when you have to sit in the seat but at least i tried it on the st. Joseph, next day back in the kayak on the paw paw to cover some distance. Pictures below
With Lawrence and Watervliet only 11 miles apart by highway the water trail map made it look only a little longer by river but it turned out the old guy at the put-in was spot-on (“that’s a long way”, “it will probably take all day”, “good luck”). I underestimated the distance big time.
Fun to see how compatible the canoe and kayak were in getting down the river and around and over obstacles even though each had different strengths. Canoe maybe better for ducking under fallen trees and carrying over and around obstacles and kayak way more maneuverable in downfall and definitely better for going over stuff.
