Vibrio and Iron Disorders - warm water

I guess this would fall under “other gear” as it relates to first aid supplies.

Are there any paddlers out there who have Hemochromatosis or Iron Overload Disorder? Do you paddle in warm-water areas where there is a risk of Vibrio infection? If so, what precautions do you take to prevent wound infection.

If you were to take an expedition to a warm-water area, have you been advised to take injectible antibiotics with you? I am wondering about this as I was recently diagnosed with this condition and am high risk of sepsis and death from Vibrio.

I paddle mostly cold-water areas, but don’t want to rule out a trip to Baja!

Talk with your doctor before you go
About a prophylactic course of oral Doxycycline, Cipro or Levaquin. Stay away from uncooked fish as well as shellfish.
