The title says it all. I used the search function of the forum, alot of the greenland paddle topics are old. Found a few newer topics. Right now I'm leaning towards Don Beale as it looks like he is taking orders on his website. Is there any up and coming newcomers I could've missed in my research or anyone else I should consider today? This will be my first greenland paddle. Thx in advance.
PM me again Marksman. I may be able to help.
Segla Gear: Ikigai, Viper or Narwhal
I’m on my 3rd GP, an Eastpole 2-piece western red cedar 2 piece Nanook Marluk paddle, made in Estonia. Also have a Gearlab carbon fiber 2-piece Akiak. I like both but confess a bit of a preference for wood paddles. Mine are all unshouldered but many people prefer shouldered blades. I don’t know if import tariffs are going to affect the Eastpoles.
My first GP was a 5 layer laminated cedar one piece custom which is still my favorite after 15 years but the maker retired 10 years ago, unfortunately. There is a fellow in Virginia who advertises on Etsy and will make a custom one piece laminated GP similar to the one I have for $275. I think it’s best to start out with a one piece wood GP. I only got the two piece ones for airline travel with my folding kayaks, but I like all 3. They are different lengths (213 cm, 220 cm and 230 cm) so I tend to prefer particular ones with certain boats that have differing beams and hull depths.
Stay away from Adanac Paddles
I got mine from Lowe’s for about $10 (maybe $15 nowadays for a cedar 2x4). Seriously if you have the time and means, making one is pretty easy and if nothing else you can figure out what you want if you end up buying one.
Then why can’t you build a Kayak rack?
For what reasons?
If your still pondering, I got my first and only greenland paddle from Gearlab Outdoors, their Kalleq. That was four years ago, and have not looked back. But if buying one today, I think I would get the Narwhale from Segla Gear that Marshall carries.
I had no trouble adjusting to the Greenland, from my Werner Kalliste. Easy peasy. The Kalleq is a wonderful paddle.
I love my Gram 2-piece. Excellent attention to detail incredibly light, rock-solid connection, and non-slip finish. If I lost it, I’d order another immediately.
