Don’t say you’ve never been invited to go paddlin’. Here’s your opportunity.
Weenie Fest Sat. Sept 27, Come one, come all, an inclusive event that features a hot dog roast and a class II/III beginner friendly paddle on the New River
Where: the grandview sandbar campground (gvsb) located on the new river
When: Saturday Sept. 27th. we will meet in the parking lot of gvsb at 11, and figure out our shuttle up to the glade creek access and boat the 4.9 miles back to the gvsb campground. Cookout to follow the ww run in the campground. Of course part of the eats are weiners- hotdogs, brats, mets etc. The rest is a covered dish.
What you need to know. This is a class II-III river with good collection pools for swimmers below the rapids. First timers are welcome to come. If you are new to whitewater you may want to consider trying a ducky or raft. Post under this thread what your needs are and we will make it happen. Camping is still first come first serve at grandview sandbar for 2025. It does fill up on weekends. Nearby campgrounds include army camp, glade creek, and war ridge. There are just a few campsites big enough for smallish rvs. Most sites in the national park are for tents or walk in. Folks are encouraged to share sites. Cars can be left in the parking lot.
Is Weeny Fest actually a festival? No, but it occurs annually the weekend after gauley fest. I started it when my ex wife complained “you are always on the gauley, when will you boat with me?”
Typically water levels are low on the New that time of year. I describe the run as “splashy fun” where you can say “wee wee wee” as you go through the rapids. We’ve had as few as 7 or 8 folks show up and as many as 50. It does help if you will post up a day or two ahead so I can judged how many hot dogs and buns to buy.
Who can attend? Anybody that wants to may do so. Invite your friends and your friends’ friends. There will also be a brief wvwa meeting usually just before or after the meal.
