True. Here stumps rot away in 3-4 years. In Yellowstone we camped in 2015 in areas that still had dead timber standing from a fire that killed 'em in 1989.

Soil in the PNW is also very biologically active. I can’t remember its title, but a book I read cited a study in which scientists counted the organisms found in ONE CUBIC INCH of soil from the forest. They were astounded to find that the counts ran into 7 digits!

I may have to scavenge for fish remains for a similar reason. Three years ago I planted some hollies and the damn things won’t grow. They’re alive but not thriving. Store-bought fertilizer doesn’t seem to be helping.
