Where can I get the "shaft"?

Looking for a piece of lightweight shaft to put between the blade ends of my old Patasi wing paddle.

It came with a modified piece of shaft that I turned into an adjustable joint with an old bicycle seat post and clamp, but the whole thing weighs 33 oz.!

I’d like to lighten it up a bit now that I’m pretty sure that 206 would be a good length…

Pretty sure…
…you can get the “Shaft” over on B&B…

Washington, DC?

Try
McMaster Carr, they seem to have everything. Or, talk to Pat at ONNO paddles and see what he recommends. He’s a great guy and easy to deal with. But he does stay busy in his one man shop, so getting in touch with him can take a week or so.

OH HO HO…
Ben Dover.

And then

Google “paddle ferrule” n/m

Zaveral paddles sells tubular carbon fiber by the inch. Try their website.

Bill

just be sure you know the ID
the interior diameter of your paddle shaft before ordering a ferrule. You can epoxy tube in place, or get a kit with a push button if you want a take apart.

Sorry…

....forgot to mention a few other considerations.

I am looking to replace the ENTIRE SHAFT with something a bit lighter, as I am neither a sprint racer or built like Liwowski, and am more concerned with a bit lighter weight for distance. I know Turbo has shafts, but I don't think I need something that heavy or pricy. A 30mm shaft 40"/102cm long with a slightly thinner wall would be nice, and am hoping to get somewhat it economically, as the whole paddle didn't cost $100!

Why not consider bamboo?

You can find bamboo online, as well as places like Pier One Imports. It's light, has more tensile strength, pound for pound, than steel and many species are workable to make a shaft for little or no financial investment. I plan to make at least one paddle using bamboo as a shaft.

If you go this route, be sure to drill a tiny (

If you go this route, be sure to drill a tiny (less than 1mm is okay) hole near the internode (“knuckle”)of each chamber, for good pressure equalization in changing temperatures (to avoid splitting). Bring your paddle blades and ferrule with you when you look for the bamboo, to match up the diameter. (Chech both ends of the bamboo shaft to make sure one end does not change diameter for one end to another.)
