My son is almost 2, and he loves to go out in the canoe with us. I’d really like to get him his own paddle to have. I’d like a small wooden one… nothing fancy, and hopefully unfinished so I can paint it myself. But I’ll settle for anything right now. I’ve looked everywhere and found nothing. I found an extendable plastic paddle that goes from 22" - 48" at BassProShops, but it isn’t at all what I’m looking for.
Thanks!

Bending Branches
Check the Bending Branches web site. They make a childrens paddle. Of course you need to find a retailer who sells them.
Does sawyer still make paddles? I’ve
a childs canoe paddle I bought made by Sawyer many years ago, over 20…It was finished, but a very nice paddle, even has a synthetic edge like the grown-ups.
Call us, though we do not get too
many, we save all our ‘blems’ for kids.
Love to send these out.
Great Idea!!!
For a two year old…
I might possibly have what you are looking for in my kindling wood box.
I just threw several foot long ones made out of oak in there the other day.
My wife and I do a lot of racing, and these are trophies from racing our C-2. They give two and we only hang up one so I was cleaning up and took the brass plaque off them and was going to use them as kindling.
They are paddle shaped about the size of a ping pong racquet. The only thing is it is just a
piece of wood cut out from a band or jig saw, so the blade is not flattened. If you have a electric belt sander you could shape it.
For a four or five year old , they would be too small, but for a two year old it might be a good toy.
If you want one e-mail me and we will send you one.
If you are looking for a real paddle, Feather Brand, (Caviness Woodworking Co) makes minis.
We have one that is three feet long
I think I have seen them at Wally World.

kids paddle
When my son was that age, I started him with a whiffle ball bat. he felt he was contributing, and it didn’t disrupt our paddling. also no damage to boat when he was learning. when he graduated to a real paddle, I sanded the shafts down so he could get his hands around them. Most childrens length paddles, have the same shaft size as adult paddles. he now has a fox works bent shaft, in childrens size. and contributes quite well. Feather brand or owl paddles makes kids beavertail paddles in 3 different lengths. Jon
Kid’s paddles I have are:
Sawyer and Nashwaak that are more small adult than true kid's paddles.
True kid's paddles are a few generic, a Gray Owl, and a Voyageur. All of which you will find in your local canoe shop. Or look on line.

You do not identify where you are.
If you are near one of us that have paddles our kid’s (grand kids for you old farts!) have outgrown someone might just give you one. Or at least sell you one cheap.

Campmor
I got my almost 2-year old daughter a small wooden paddle from Campmor. I think it was made by Old Town, but I may be mistaken since I took the sticker off it. It’s been AWESOME in the canoe. Keeps her occupied. Just be prepared to snag it out of the water a few times when he/she drops it.
Turtle Paddle Works
I bought my eldest granddaughter her first paddle when she was age two, from Turtle Paddle Works. She is now five, and that first paddle is too small for her, but she won’t go paddling without it. They are nice folks at Turtle Paddle and will even put your child’s name on the paddle, making it more personal. I own a walnut ottertail which I use when I have a hankering for the traditional feel.

I made one from a 1x4 . With a scroll
saw and sander it took about an hour.
Under 36"?
Turtle paddle works seems to be the only place that has anything I would count as childrens. The only other short paddle I’ve found is 42" or an expanding paddle.
Any other websites? My local walmart only has the 42" paddle.

Bending Branches Minnow
We bought the kids the Bending Branches Minnow. It’s a great one piece paddle. It’s light weight and easy for the kids to use. Their web site list where to buy.
14"
the one at Campmor I got has to be only about 14". It’s just a toy for a toddler to play with, not an actual paddle.
