WW kayak recs for smaller paddler?

Looking for advice—any recommendations of a beginner to intermediate river running, planing hull kayak for a smaller paddler (5’2”). If trade-offs need to be made, i would prioritize maneuverability over tracking, and stability over ease of rolling. I paddled a Wavesport EZ in the past and liked it, so I wouldn’t mind a modern version of that (if one exists). Thoughts?

The Wavesport EZ was a playboat so I’d think you’d be happy with any of the small sized new boats out there. The Jackson Flow in a small might be something to check out.

If wanting something more playful a half slice like the
Jackson Antix 2.0
Dagger Rewind
Liquid Logic Hot Whip
are all popular choices.
If searching the used market, I resource I’ve found helpful for learning about older boats is Paddling Buyer's Guide
So many good choices out there it’s challenging to narrow it down.

Thanks for this Josh. Those are good suggestions. I’ve come across the Antix and Rewind before, but the Flow is new to me. It’s so hard to make a decision without having the chance to demo them. Lots of conflicting reviews! I’ve read that the Wavesport fuse was a more recent version of the EZ, but people seem to have a love-hate relationship with it.

Where do you live/paddle? What class and type of rivers will you be using this boat on? Any WW clubs/groups in your area?

I’m still relatively new to whitewater but would describe myself as an intermediate level paddler. I live in Texas so my whitewater trips necessitate heavy rains for our handful of local runs, day trips to Riversports Rapids in OKC to practice, or weekend trips out of State. I spend a lot of time day dreaming of whitewater and binging YouTube videos, including boat reviews.
I recommended the flow because from all the reviews I’ve come across it seems like a real good all around whitewater boat for those not focused on play/tricks or going fast.

I’ve looked up the Flow reviews, and it does sound like a great boat. I live in Ontario, Canada so the Ottawa river is our big game in town. I believe it goes right up to a class V in parts, but most of it is class III/IV. I hadn’t thought to look up local clubs, that’s a good idea. Good for you for making it work down in Texas! What boat do you paddle yourself?

My whitewater boat is a Dagger RPM. I also recently picked up a Wavesport XXX, but haven’t been able to paddle it much yet. Budget hasn’t allowed for a new boat yet.

Since you’re in Canada you should check out Soul, 2024 Plastic Kayaks – Soul Waterman

You might want to check out the Jackson Kayak Fun 1.5. It’s known for its maneuverability and stability, making it a solid choice for someone of your size who values those traits. It’s a modern option that could be a great fit given your preferences

For a smaller paddler seeking a modern alternative to the Wavesport EZ, the Dagger Axiom 6.9 and Jackson Fun 1.5 are solid choices. Both kayaks offer excellent maneuverability and stability, making them suitable for beginner to intermediate river running. The Axiom provides a playful feel with a planing hull, while the Fun 1.5 is forgiving and responsive, ideal for smaller paddlers.

Thanks for the suggestion drake, I’ll definitely be checking that out

Two votes for the Jackson Fun, which is definitely on my list, and the Axiom, which I’m not as familiar with but I like your characterization of it. It does sound very much like what I’m looking for. Thanks for the feedback Harrystones.

Great answer about paddler.
