Commercial boats - Greenland skills

You’ve come a long way wilso! nice

“fewer than five that she can’t do
in that boat.”

Can she do them in other boats?

"it’s not the boat’s fault"
and he recommends rolling with whatever you already have

Rolling ease
Several good composite boats out there for Greenland rolling. My favs are:

Dagger Meridian (which has become the WS Zephyr

Tempest

Rockpool ALAW BACH (which I sell so I am bias towards)

Falcon

“Greenlander” is a misnomer…
…as NDKs interpretation is a rather high volume boat that’s not at all like most traditional Greenland kayaks. Hard chines and a round cockpit may be “Greenlandic” characteristics, but the boat is still a barge compared to the “real thing”. That’s not to say it’s a bad boat for what it is, it’s just not as close to traditional Greenland kayaks as the AA and other lower volume designs are.

Here are
some pictures to compare

the differance is noticiable

Not a Greenland roller, but…

I'm quite small at 5'2". I own both a roto Tempest 165 and an Explorer LV. While I added 1/2" minicell foam under both seats to raise me to desired position in these boats, I can easily do the static brace in both boats, and "normal rolls" are also easy. Ditto for sculling while lying in the water.

I used a Romany LV for 5 days in a Body Boat Blade class and that boat didn't even need the 1/2" padding for a snug fit. It was easy to roll and that's the boat I learned the static brace in. You might actually find it too tight--try one if you can.

You’re making me take a lot of pictures
of the AA! I loaded up a few more pictures:

Look at the two with the ruler. I placed the ruler across the hull at the rear bulkhead. Pretty dramatic curve.

curious
first I’ve ever seem a 1990 with the old style deck line system too…my wifes deck lines have the modern screw type deck line recessed holders…my '87 has the same type you picture

http://www.geocities.com/roym52/AA-deckline-1.jpg

looks like that kayak was made with the old pre 1988 mold.

maybe a special order that was requested made from the old mold and serial numbered as a 1990…

the '90 had the old style compass mount for the little round based compass so that would be the same (I changed both of ours to take a 70P)…but as far as I’m aware the deck line holders should be the modern ones with the screw in rocker insert. like on my Nordkapp

I would be curious to know “that kayaks”, build history…it does not seem typical for a '90

Robin Goodlife would be the one to ask…but I believe he is living in the south of France and out of contact.

Yup
In her SOF, in which she has won medals in Greenland competitions held in Greenland including rolling. She is the first non-Greenland woman to have won a number of these awards.

She is a well-known name in Greenland circles, and many of us on the east coast have had the chance to work with her. Website under her name lists the other stuff she does/has done, hardly unimpressive outside of greenland paddling skills. Probably went under your radar Bo(w).

I
guess it’s time for more research. I bought the boat well used in Me last August. It has a decal on the deck from the original dealer who is still in business. I’ll try to contact them and see what i can find out.

Another interesting thing is the the USCG MIC database result for the HIN beginning ‘HJL’ comes up with some out of business company in Iberia, MO.

More interesting is that the dealer in ME has a MIC of ‘HJO’, but it states they are out-of-business.

http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic_detail.aspx?id=HJO

Yet, they still have a website:

http://www.h2outfitters.com/

which states they have been in business since 1982!

Time to email them…

greenlander
The greenlander pro is definately like that, pretty high volume, my legs though would beg to differ with you after a few hours in the standard greenlander. Not a heck of alot of room in there.

I sent you an email NM

The 1990 looks typical…
…of newer boats, too. Both of mine are at my girlfriend’s house and I won’t be able to check them for a few days at least.

Try paddling an Anas Acuta…
…or better yet, a properly fitted skin boat. By comparison, the Greenlander or G’ Pro is cavernous.

Thanks to you et al
I’ve learned a lot over the years from your (salty) posts on this board. You were the first I read to note that it is not simply hard chine or soft chine - probably 6 or so years ago. Your note of the importance of how an where volume is caried in a hull also opened my eyes.

Your posts are very valuable to me and other paddlers who seek to understand more about kayak design and performance without being engineers…

Vela layback roll?
Celia,

are you able to lean back completely (touch the boat with your head) in your Vela? I’ve tried several seat positions but I’m not able to lay on my beck deck (i.e. for hand rolls). Is it me/my (unflexible?) back or the boat?
