I am in lust - Outer Island

very helpful
thank you.

Your response is exactly what i was looking for to be able to make an

informed decision. Obviously I have demoed the Outer Island and will

try to demo some more times. It is a wonderfully fast boat and I quite

enjoyed it but again, I only paddled it in a slight breeze on a calm

lake at a paddlefest. I pretty much hogged the boat over two days as I

really wanted to put it through its paces but didn’t take it into any

conditions.

It was too tight for me with the standard seat so I would need to lower

it with a foam seat which will have two advantages one of which you

mentioned in so far as stability. Also moving it up a bit would

position my thighs properly against the braces but this might become a

moot point if I go with the Outer Island with the ocean cockpit, or just

use a masik.

All in all I quite enjoyed the performance of the boat and frankly I

have a plastic Tempest 170 that I will use in surf or rock gardens. The

Outer Island will be used in calm seas and on large lakes as I really

want to work on Greenland manouvers.

Thanks again for your comments.

Actually…
Your “slider idea” is even better. That way you don’t have holes to cover up on the coaming. Some waveskis have slider slots for the belt placement. The individual can move the belt, up or back, where it’s most comfortable and tighten.

Maybe a metal slider system just under the coaming. The slider is screwed into the coaming, and the seat can be move up and down slider as desired by the individual.

I think folks can, of course, try to trim by altering the load in the front or back bulkheads but that doesn’t work on day trips.

I just ordered all three books mentioned above. there is no longer any hope for me. I blame you all. You know who you are.

Check out 3M or local hardware store
Just look it up on 3M site, or google it. Local hardware store sometimes have it. I take the soft sticky glue off the backside and then use genuine contact cement to adhere it to the hull and to the foam. However, there are likely many other equally good or even better ways I don’t know about.

I appreciate your review.

Thank you Evans. I shall be building a 17' version soon. I think it will be a good fit.

wood strip Outer Island
does anyone in Fouth Florida or near Raleigh NC have an Outer Island wood strip boat that I could come and see/sit in/paddle?

Paul

Wood strip OI’s
You might want to post this also on:

www.kayakforum.com

There are many folks there who have built the OI…Jay Babina (OI designer)also posts on that site on a regular basis. It is an exquisite boat in wood. I live in CT as does Jay, and have on a few occasions paddled with ConnYak (CT Kayak Assoc. www.connyak.org). There a many folks who have built OI’s in CT. I paddled one about 4 years ago…a beautiful boat to look at AND to paddle.

masik
Wouldn’t a masik resolve the thigh brace issue you (and I) experienced with the OI? Just curious as the costs are going to be significantly higher with the ocean cockpit and 2006 model.

Paul

masik
A masik would change it some, but the thigh braces are still in the wrong place for my use (long thigh bone) especially compared to Danny. I however already have my SUV / camping boat. so have considered the OI as a day/play boat. I now use a Anas Acuta or a Pintail as a Day/play /rolling boat and looked at it in the vein of a little faster running day boat. It however doesn’t really replace either of those boats so it would be an addition to the fleet if I end up with one. And for a day/play boat I prefer an ocean cockpit. The hull is already low enough , that for me it wouldn’t take much foam to fit it to me, and I believe that the thigh braces in it are just plain wrong for me. I’m #205 with size 12 feet. I however have only paddled it with the stock seat, and after removing the seat, the inside feel changes. I only paddled one once, liked the hull, wanted a compass recess and an ocean cockpit so didn’t figure that I wanted to buy a brand new boat and have to start remaking it. I figured I would hold off any heavy investment untill it was closer to what I would like (features) Besides, A masik is just a piece of foam, and even thought it can bridge the gapping hole of a keyhole cockpit, it doesn’t replace having an ocean cockpit for fit
