Well, finally back on the surf saddle again. It’s been 14 weeks since I last surfed and 12 week post mitral valve replacement. Lots of good surf this spring in New England. But I had to focus on rehab and recovery - twice daily walks, leading to light calisthenics, daily rounds on the double end speed bag, then rucking and, and more recently, “torture” sessions with kettlebells. Well worth it!
Aside from initial nervousness with the 3-4’ surf, I felt almost as good as when I left off. That first capsize and shakey but successful roll put almost everything back into place.

Thanks. I am enjoying having “more time”, especially in combination with good health again! More waves this weekend, but I’m headed off to camp and flyfish for the next few days. I’ll catch the waves, if these are still around during the “work week” days.

Thursday my friend Frank and I had a good day Fly Fishing on the Chauga River here in SC. Didn’t catch any Brookies but did catch Rainbows and Brown.

No “bad days” fishing, IMO. Just got back from camping and fishing north central MA. Fished a small brook that I had not fished in over 25 years. Beautiful “blue line” stream that I enjoyed aesthetically but had found significant success fishing in the past. I had a great day catching brookies this time, hooking fish exactly where I thought they “should be.” Immensely satisfying. Also, very fun (and less stress on my arm/shoulder) using an ultralight Tenkara rod rather than a traditional western flyrod and reel. I think my water reading and fishing skills are much better now.
There is surf today, but family events preside. Heading to western ME tomorrow for several days. Will fish the mighty Androscoggin in northern NH… I am getting to like this “retirement” thingie more and more. LOL!

So true about the aesthetics of mountain streams, reading the water and catching them where you think they should be! It seems to me that being on and/or in the water combined with wild places is just good for the soul. I have to smile when you mention Tenkara. I think I remember “someone” saying they didn’t need another fly rod when I posted about fishing with the simplicity and convenience of Tenkara. 
I am jealous when you talk about camping and fishing in Maine.
HA!!! Were you the one that planted “Tenkara” in my brain!?! My Tenkara collection is catching up to my flyrod/reel collection.
I have two flyfishing camping trips booked for the upper Connecticut River (flyfishing only regs) in northern NH this summer. NH Fish & Game just changed its regs to include Tenkara this past year. Prior to that Tenkara was not considered legit flyfishing and excluded from “flyfishing only” waters.
Between my Tenkara rods and the Hornbeck New Tricks canoe, I expect to fish some of the more remote wilderness ponds that seemed to hard to access in the past with the heavier and more obtrusive gear!

I believe I am guilty as charged. I have a pocket rod with me much of the time. I have been lusting after this rod in the video, but sailing is the hole in the water that is sucking most of my money down at the moment. He gives his thoughts and review of it at 18 min 25 seconds in the video.

Generally, I am about catch and release. So red meat is the main course at camp.

I too, mostly catch and release but do keep some trout to eat. It depends on where I am fishing and time of year to some degree. They are good for you and really easy to clean. The majority go back especially the real big ones and little ones.
