Big white boat rule. They do.

The Law of Gross Tonnage is an accepted nautical convention that when a sea-going vessel has the right-of-way as established by the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 (72 COLREGS), it should nonetheless give way when faced with a larger vessel. This law is regularly invoked in non-maritime situations, such as when a bicyclist with the right-of-way invokes the Law of Gross Tonnage to avoid the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) that is about to cut them off.

The heavier vessel always has the right-of-way. There is no explicit directive in maritime regulations or law for the the Law of Gross Tonnage other than it is common sense that giving way and being alive is usually better than forcing one’s right-of-way and being dead.

In Pearl Harbor it is called the “Big Grey Boat rule” Small boats must get out of the way. For approval by the authorities and survival. Those big “boats” just can’t stop, turn, etc as good as the big boys. It is largely a common sense issue…before it is anything else.

Seneca River is at flood stage

Fortunately I’m up a ways still!

I hope your home stays dry! I’ve always wanted to live on a river but know I couldn’t cope with flooding. I live very near the river and have had my house flood terribly once, which was enough. But in the non-flooding times, it would be heaven to walk out the door and get right on the water.

Thanks! Fortunately im up on a hill and well out of the flood zone. If it gets to me, we are all in big trouble. This is the highest it’s been in decades tho and gauge is still going up and rain is falling

I’ve been looking to move for a while but I often joke that I should stay in my current home, that it will be riverfront property within the decade. It’s not much of a joke, though. We’re seeing more frequent and higher flooding levels, and that’s going to keep happening.

I’m glad you’re out of the flood zone - I hope you stay that way!

My solution: I found a number of old kayaking caledars which I had saved for whatever reason, perhaps for a time like now when I can’t find a 2022 calendar. Anyway, the kayaking calendar I have from 2011 works perfectly. Sad so many publishers of earlier kayaking calendars no longer offer them - perhaps just not enough interest.

Happy Halloween freaks!

Gorgeous day paddling to Caladesi Island SP and Three Rooker Island. Amazing how the crowds disappear this time of year once it cools down. Air temp low 70s today, coolest day here since the spring.
