" Ripped OFF"

Live and learn I guess…
Please dont think I’m passing judgement I’m not,

I had a very simular thing happen to me although

It was a guitar not a boat and I never got a dime back. i feel for you and I’ll tell ya this

I would never do anything like that again.

It’s up to the buyer to PAY first then Inspect the Item with a pre-determined arrangement.

approval or whatever with the buyer paying shipping fees if he wants to return an Item.

thats how it works on ebay for a sensable

reason the power is in the sellers hands as is the Item to be sold. good luck and hope for the best! Ed

I took a check for the last one sold…
I had had much contact with the buyer and I delivered it myself to a local (1.5 hours away) yacht club were it was to live. Felt OK in that situation.

I would never ship it or let it drive off without the check clearing first.

Hope it turns out OK.

I bought a paddle with a check and
the seller shipped the paddle before he received my check. Now, that was trust. He was a pastor, so maybe he trusts more than most people do.

Still, you’re also not talking about $1K
I’d give a little more trust when the potential loss is less, and caution goes up exponentially with the price.

When I sold and delivered (half-way) my canoe last weekend, I would have been glad to just wait for my money until we met. However, I was driving 2.5 hours to the meet and spending the night in a hotel (on business) and was afraid of the seller backing out. What do you do with a canoe on top of a vehicle all night at a casino hotel?! A little fearful of that, I asked for and received a Paypal deposit.

Ended up being really nice people, but of course, that’s hard to determine over e-mail and phone calls.

Gotta be careful meeting people for
transactions too.

T’was a Werner Kalliste bent shaft,
so no cheapie, but still not $1000.

Not in an open parking lot at Bass Pro
on a Sunday afternoon full of people and security cams. Being 6’3, 220 with a bat in the back of the Honda pickup doesn’t hurt either . . . .

(notice my lack of emoticons?)

I sold a kayak a few weeks ago,
and the buyer drove a hundred miles from another state to get here on a Sunday. I stated in two emails to him on Friday that he could have it for our agreed upon price in CASH, and even stated CASH a second time in the final email.

He shows up and pulls out his checkbook, and I am like ‘uh, what is THAT for ?’. He says “oh, i thought when you said cash that a check would be OK”.

I asked him “what do I do with a check ?” when he looked at me funny i said “I CASH it”.

He and his girlfriend spent 25 minutes chasing around to multiple ATM machines to get enough $$ and then he was still $200 short as they had hit their daily limits. I ended up taking a check for the $200, and it did clear and everything was fine, but there was no way in hell he was driving away with my boat with nothing in my hand but an out of state check.

When I sell camera gear over the internet, the only form of payment I accept is Post Office Money Orders. Their web site has very clear ways to verify their authenticity and you have some recourse if they are forged.

Internet transactions question:
Have you ever used Paypal, or is there a reason to avoid it? I’ve never had an issue, so I’m wondering if you have or just aren’t familiar?

One nice thing is that you can get a free debit card for it, so as a seller, every time someone sends you money, you can get cash at an ATM (small fee) or just use it like a credit card to purchase things for no fee.

Use it alot
But they charge a 4% fee on all incoming money. That includes any shipping fees etc… But they are secure.

4% isn’t much. Just have to build it in.
$1000 transaction cost $40. About the same as depositing a bounced check, but with a $960 bonus.

Brother, guard your heart and forgive
the person. God can bring the money back to you in one way or another if your heart is right.

paypal
google paypal horor stories and you will find a lot of people who have been bitten by paypal, especially after they thought transactions were complete.

I have simply avoided it as I don’t want to give them access to any of my accounts.

Nope…
Sometimes ya gotta whup some ass and leave the ‘turn the other cheek’, Jesus loves you, forgive and forget crap for Sunday school. In the real world an asshole rips you off, you kick his butt, take no prisoners and get some measure of satisfaction out of it.

Nice thoughts, but why directed at me?
I neither lost any money, any boats, nor showed any anger to anyone.

Whoah
I lost track of the tread somehow. Too much water in my ears. LOL

Thought so.
No harm, no foul. I just started to question what I had written . . . .

Have you resolved this?..
I know of someone in the Triathlete community in Milwaukee area.

I’d rather not get him involved if not necessary (he said he would), but if you have reached ead ends with all of the other suggestions, let me know.

Hi,

I read through the posts and saw great ideas to nail this guy. Good luck and let us know the outcome of whatever you choose to do.

I would almost ask him for more money just not to get prosecuted, but for one thing, it could get you in trouble and #2, you may not want to threaten him where he moves or tries to hide in some way. Be stealthy, but get him!!!
