I’m looking for peoples opinions/suggestions on their facvourite river/rescue knives.
I’m using the Wenoka Squeeze-lock and am pretty happy with it, looking for a new knife for my GF, wondering if there is anything ‘interesting’ people are using.

Wenona Squeeze Lock
After rotating thru (that means losing) a Gerber River Shorty and a UK small scuba knife, one time on a night paddle and the other during normal rescue scenarios - both knives came out when they shouldn’t have, under not much pressure …I scored a used Winona Squeeze last winter.
Best knife so far. Just came back from symposium where I did a lot of scrambling on and off boats & the knife never budged nor got hooked on anything.
why not get her what you have - compact, low profile, nice edges, easy to lash, and at least for me pretty bombproof about not releasing accidentally.
Right up there with aggressive snakes.
he’s gonna poke his eye out
CRKT Bear Claw
http://www.crkt.com/bearclaw.html
I’ve got a Bear Claw, with a rounded tip and serrated blade. It’s not accidentally coming out of its sheath. The blunt tip and curved shape make it easy to slide in between flesh and rope, and it’s dang good at cutting rope. A good PFD knive, but not the best all around knife, so if you are going on overnighters you might need to carry a second knife in your gear.
$385 for a river knife? jeez!
I said "coolest"
I didn’t say cheapest or most functional or easily available. They have such a backlog a Randall that orders put in today are expected to ship “first quarter of 2014.” And no, there is no typo in that date.

Good info here on caring for this blade to keep the lock working well.

that’s not the coolest
that thing would rust in one season
now this, this is cool and won’t rust (again, it’s not cheap) http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=27572&deptid=960
Copilot needs two things:
A line hook like the bigger version (there’s room), and (for both sizes) a handle that lets you know which way the blade is facing without looking.
I suppose a small round file could remedy both…
Minor stuff maybe , but both things that matter when stuff goes wrong and you’re inverted/can’t see… Blade on copilot is getting so short as to be of questionable usefulness too.
(I have a small BCD knife that’s decent [for me meaning blunt tip/straight and serrated edges/line hook, reasonably small overall size for PFD carry - say under 7"] except for the 100% symmetry of handle (but a file can remedy this too).
Most of them are really bad.
On the river I most often NEED a knife a couple times a day to spread peanut butter and to slice big fat grape fruit. So I have to carry a pick long honking knife. I also sometime need a sturdy knife I can pry with.
I don’t know what those little short knives that go on your vest are good for. I used to have one but I never could use it for anything so I still had to carry the big knife for the peanut butter. When the little knife got knocked into the deep during some surf stupidity I never replaced it.
Maybe a big long divc knife would be good?
Truly Fine Knife!
The 2 Randals I’ve had since the 60’s have traveled the world and been used in real world situations, thanks to Uncle Sam.
If you want a knife to use and pass on to future generations, the Randal knives are a bargin.
How Big is Your Peanut Butter Jar?!
Jeesh my Shorty spreads the PB just fine.
You carrying a gallon jug or something?
Tommy
I will second that
I have the bearclaw attached to my PFD…

some other suggestions
I have a Spyderco Atlantic Salt - folder knife. I have been eying the Boye knives also and another knife which I would give a look at is the Spyderco Caspian Salt - non folder - a little pricey but if only one knife, this would be a nice choice.(it can be found for $110) Depends on what style and how much you are willing to spend. I also have an inexpensive Gerber River shorty (blunt tip) but it is bulky for me.
