what is your favorite, everyday kayak paddle?

I have an older paddle I’ll be using with my new boat but, it’s a cheap and heavy affair. I want to upgrade to a nicer, lighterweight paddle soon.
The different models out there are countless. I’d liek to keep the cost to $150 max I think.

Any thoughts? Any favorites?

Greenland paddle. Lumpys are my favorites but home-mades are nice, too.

I like Greenland Paddles too…make my own

Werner ikelos 205

My go to is a Werner Cyprus; but my all time favorite was a Mitchell all wood paddle

Having a light well designed paddle is probably more important for paddling enjoyment if you paddle a lot. Think how many times you raise the paddle and pull your boat through the water on a several hour trip. You can get a decent paddle for that price to start with that will be a bit heavy, but a good, lightweight, fairly stiff, well designed carbon/hybrid paddle is going to cost you more money. In the long run it’s worth it. Double your budget and then ask the same question

Werner Cyprus, but unfortunately it’s well above your $150 budget.

But, before you decide on a specific model are you a high or low angle paddler? It makes all the difference in paddle selection.

Greenland. $5.00. You can have 30 of them for $150

I’m also a Greenland fan. But I have a couple of Aquabound “standard” paddles with carbon shafts (that came with used boats I bought) and they are not bad at all and are only 30 ounces. I often carry one as a deck spare and switch off to it from the Greenland on longer days to use different muscles. The Aquabound Sting Ray (the model I have) is always available for around $140 and is often on sale for less.

Werner Shuna - 205 cm straight shat (though I might switch down to 200 cm when I buy another). A bit above your desired price at about $300 retail. I prefer larger blade paddles and a higher angle stroke when I am pushing it.

Carlisle Expeditrion is a paddle that I have heard others recommend as a lower price paddle that others says is comparable to the Shuna or other glass blade/carbon shaft Werners.

2nd the Aquabound. Good paddle for the price.

hmmm. can’t find lumpy paddles anywhere. Is he still in business?

I like Lendals, great indexing on the shaft.

Kayak paddle?

Eric Shade Greenland paddle, 230cm., Wood.

Sadly, no. Bill abruptly shut down his shop last year. His paddles are wonderful; you had to go through a lot of discussion with him before he’d start carving one for you. My Lumpy is just a couple of ounces heavier than my Werner Cyprus, which weighs 22.5 ounces. For headwinds and distances, Lumpy is my favorite. For power and speed, the Cyprus.

Epic Relaxed Tour full Carbon with burgundy shaft length adjustable from 205cm to 215cm, they are about $450 new.

The Swift Mid Swift is also a nice paddle.

My go-to is also a Lumpy. Recently had a shorter GP made for my deck spare made by Thomas Moen of ThomasBoats as Lumpy is no longer in business. It’s pretty nice as well and as my Lumpy is kind of old and dinged up, I may have TM make me another the same size or an inch or 2 longer than my Lumpy.

second - again (Werner Cyprus, but unfortunately it’s well above your $150 budget.)
save up its money well spent

Thanks Monkeyhead. Good to know…
