The sights we paddle for!
Boundary Waters, MN
Rivers of Oregon.
I just looked at some pictures of Lake Pend Oreille. Pretty gorgeous!! Also saw that the navy tests submarines there, or at least scaled down models. Cool!
Starting in WWII, the Navy also had a college at that location … electrical engineering and such degrees were available. Since discontinued.
The boundary waters for flat water paddling and The Buffalo river for some current are my two favorite places so far. I live somewhat in between each place with a 6-9 hour drive, but I wouldn’t want a year to slip by without making a trip out to each.
Anywhere in Northern Saskatchewan, Canada. Over 100,000 lakes. The northern half of Lac La Ronge was awesome this summer. Too shallow for power boats but our kayaks just skimmed on through.
I grew up on the coast of SC with a lot of time in Florida. Interactions with stinging and biting creatures was and is a common occurrence.
The only alligators that are a concern are the ones that are fed by humans on a regular basis, and insist on walking their toy dogs next to them. My grandfather used dogs to bait gators so he could kill them.
Snakes are like most wild creatures and want nothing to do with humans. Unless you step on one you will never know they are there. I saw my Dad kick a cottonmouth off a creek bank because it dared challenge him.
The creatures that scare me are yellow jackets, hornets, and red wasps. If you disturb their nests they are seriously offended and won’t rest until they’re dead or you outrun them and their goal is to hurt you to protect their nests.
Spiders creep me out but they only bite if you intrude on their personal space.
Then there are the cursed mosquitoes , sand gnats, deer flies, and horse flies.
I’m from WA and Puget Sound is amazing, but I would have to say Prince William Sound, Harrimmon Fjord. It is paddling in the throne room of the Gods with six tidewater glaciers.
Brrrr!
Okefenokee #1, and Hawaii #2
Like others have said. It is hard to pick just one.
This was a majestic day in 2009. Planet Earth. It was my favorite place to paddle that day.
There is a kayak on the beach pointing “that way”. I climbed to that vantage point in a wild hare moment. Glad I took the moment and the photo.
Peace J
That looks absolutely awesome, in the Old Skool sense of the word.
It’s a toss up.
Lofoton Islands, Norway, especially from Reine.
Merchant Row, off Deer Isle Maine (the water is really that color).
Green River in Utah from Moab, red canyons, riverside camping at the base of giant cliffs.
Also Colorado River from Fruita to Westwater, just an overnighter but amazing canyons.
Rio Pacaure in Costa Rica, white water rafting past waterfalls in the rainforest.
