Who paddled on Labor Day Weekend?

I got out on Labor Day for a trip on the Pawcatuck River in Westerly, RI. I’ve been paddling my sea kayak a lot this summer, so this was the first time I was out in my canoe in about two months - felt good.

Anyone else paddle on the holiday weekend?

We launched at 4 Mile River in Old Lyme, CT, and went out into the sound to do sea trials on my better half’s new (Old) kayak. She had the same model 20+ years ago, and regretted selling it for years. Found her one online, and she’s lovin’ it. Said it handles every bit as good as she remembers. We didn’t go far, just played in the chop for a couple of hours. Good fun!

Saturday and Monday only (Sunday weather was poor) for my morning jaunt of 4 - 6 mi. Seeing more red leaves on the shoreline maple trees. :expressionless:

Camping out at Horseneck Beach, Westport MA. Got some tiny surfable waves yesterday with the Cobra ReVision. Gone flat today. May be some waves this Friday and/or Saturday. Will fish and hike until then.

Nothing special. I paddled my kids around a local lake for a couple hours in the evening to observe the wildlife and scout fishing spots.

Too much traffic for my taste over the weekend, so I stayed off the water. Did paddle today at a local lake. Got my boat set up, then went to get in the cockpit. Flipped the boat and me into the water. :scream:. I can’t remember ever doing that. On the bright side, I did dry off by the end of the adventure.

Getting in and out of the boat is the hardest part of kayaking.

Canoes are so much easier.

Wanna hear something bizarre? I find it easier to get in and out of yaks with ocean cockpits than keyhole cockpits. My creaky knees are much happier. And what am I doing? I put my one with an ocean cockpit up for sale. Not a bright boy, am I?

right, you ‘slip into’ an OC kayak
you ‘climb into’ a keyhole kayak
(though, having said that, of the few kayaks I have, only one is an OC, and not used in some time)

I got to paddle this C1 on the Au Sable on Monday and Tuesday! Not mine - borrowed from an old family friend. Such fun!

I did a lot of paddling over this weekend. We had beautiful calm weather all weekend. Friday I set up some buoys and did some paddling and playing around with maneuvering around the buoys. It was the first time I got to try a Turning Point Boatworks Petrel. I’ve got a lot of sea kayaks, so I don’t expect to be overly impressed anymore when trying sea kayaks. Wow, I was impressed. What a great handling kayak with just a great feel to it on the water! Saturday morning we paddled sea kayaks out to the end of a sandbar extending a couple miles offshore and spent the day in the waves. Sunday I spend the morning learning from a couple of great surfski instructors in my V10, and Sunday afternoon I got to take a V9 out and we found some really fun waves to ride. The V9 felt considerably more stable than the gen 3 V10 to me, and we had a lot of fun. Monday morning had the biggest swells of the weekend along some nice, gradually sloping shoals. We again had surfskis and sea kayaks getting fun rides. I was in a sea kayak on Monday. All in all, a really great weekend!

Took the boat out to Isle of shoals. Paddler out to the seals then morning, In the afternoon she went exploring Appledore Island and a couple of us bounced our way over to Lunging and White Islands. What a perfect day on the ocean. I’d like to thank Plum Island Kayak for setting up the trip.

I’ll be up your way (NH) today - a little more inland - Nashua River from Pepperell to Nashua.

That no name fish storm that passed by yesterday really brought the goods this AM – 5’ swells in 11-12 second intervals and westerly (offshore) winds!

Heading out to surf a reef break to avoid weekend crowd at the beach break.

Cowabunga!

Spent Labor Day driving to paddling. We held the DuluthMoose Memorial Paddle (some here remember him, I’m sure) at a campground at the end of the Gunflint Trail on the edge of the BWCA. We did out and back day trips into the Boundary Waters from there but did no portaging or overnighting in the BWCA proper. Got back last night.

Sounds nice.

Sure does.

Trip to NH on the Nashua River last weekend - started in Peperrell, MA and ended in Nashua, NH

Nice! Just went by that area on the way to the White Mountains. I used to flyfish the Nissitissit river that merged with the Nashua just south of that that dam in Pepperel. Used to fish the Souhegan (a spring time ww run) just north of there quite a bit. Never actually paddled those riivers. Should give the Nashua a try with the Hornbeck!

Up north of Mount Washington for the week. Only have my flyrods. Plan to flail rather than paddle the rivers and streams.

Nice - I wish I was with you, but I’d bring the boat. Doesn’t look like I’ll get out camping this fall.
