“We have got room for two more.”
I have also had three on top off the Impreza. After a paddle down Cedar Creek in Congree National Park. A photo with one of many seen that day. It’s a brown water snake infamous for falling into boats, but harmless.
Bigger truck, more boats, more friends
Mjac, good for you.
I also have a trailer I pull when I need to load more boats which is much easier to load than a truck as is the car. I like the gas milage too. I am satisfied with my choices.
Because I had the $100 annual launch fee sticker, I had five boats 3 on the trailer and two on the roof. As can be seen in the photo we loaded the camping gear in the boats then I backed the trailer into the water. That reduced the time at the ramp and also the lifting.
Where we camped at the coast that trip.
Wasn’t comparing the two, but what is more fun, jamming 8 kayaks on top of a truck and taking your chances or safely, efficiently car topping and trailering 8 kayaks knowing you are going to get there?
I outgrew that type of thrill decades ago. I get enough of it on the water racing sailboats, sailing, canoeing and kayaking.
Still more fun.
Didn’t say that. Said which is more fun. Whether it is worth it or not is another discussion.
Don’t most roof racks have a maximum load capacity of around 250 lbs?
Serious hauling!

Depends upon the roof rack. My adjustable Thule truck bed rack has a 450# rack capacity. With the added third rack on the top of the cab it is greater.
My friend’s welded truck rack designed originally designed for ladders is much higher.
I bought a Yakima rack for my car, with a load rating of 250 lbs, but never used it because it didn’t seem very rigid. Gave it to my niece. I’m sure it depends on the car and the cross bars.
My truck ladder rack has an 800 lb rating.
I guess parking garages are right out?!
The owner of this kayak would agree:
I know a guy who did that to a very expensive road bike.
I bought this same rack for my mid size truck I had. It works great for numerous things, biggest downside, the thing squeaks and creaks like crazy
Ha! I recognize that boat (and owner). Have to admit that I did that to my Wold Epic surf kayak driving into a commercial garage. The Epic separated at the hull seam. I put it back together in an ugly but functional fix. Good thing the Epic was a very light boat that I added weight to with my crappy patch job (I I was starting to learn FG repairs).
