Boats on cars - let’s see ‘em!

This looks very nice, like a kayak on a ‘car’ in Japan, or maybe in the future – I guess NZ is close enough to both. It looks like you could live in that thing…

It is an utility van quite popular in Australia and here. People do convert them into campervan
Japan is quite far, about 11h to Tokyo from Auckland.

With the Perception Sea Lion, great boat in rough water.

Great pics! Your car looks a lot bigger under the sea lion

Thank you! I got my car before I started paddling… The next car will need to be much longer or I get a trailer.

This is my last sea kayak, an old Challenger Kayak Breeze.

With the CD Squall. Great boat, but the cockpit rim was too narrow for me. Got dragged sideways on a surf beach because I couldn’t get out fast enough.

I count 5 kayaks. Any more?

I think I’ve been pretty good in evading/ignoring when you asked that question through the years.

Paddle craft afficinados should speak lovingly and/or with constructive critique of each specific boat. But, better to avoid just a running count to avoid becoming a gadfly paddler.

Just a suggestion from a self acknowledged “paddling craft hoarder”.

Ascend 133x on a chevy equinox. Dammit this beast is hard to get on and off. I now have one of those extend-a-bed things, fully extended out. The 133x is wide and heavy (125 lbs).

Do you have a motor for that beast?

I had something like 17 kayaks and 7 paddle boards in the last 3 years. At the moment, I have 3 surfskis, a sea kayak, a double sea kayak, a sit on top double, a waveski, a 1968 kayak and 3 sup.

Here’s my old kayak from the sixties

New-to-me 2006 Epic V10L being picked up at Lake Lure in Chimney Rock, NC in 2018. The debris pile from storm cleanup in the background seemed large to us at the time. Little did we know the havoc Hurricane Helene would wreak in 2024. (The ski continues to be a challenge for me. Huge props to @MCImes skill paddling in the ocean. :muscle:)

Last spring I saw an ad on marketplace for two old Valley kayaks, and thought I’d go and look at them. The seller was an acquaintance of paddling friends of mine, he’s a good dude but sadly ended up storing these outside for a little while. Hesitant on the elasticity and overall structure at first but they seemed and looked sound. I think I picked them both up for around $400?

I removed all the hardware, cleaned and inspected throughout, replaced all deck lines and shock cord. Replaced both backbands with IR, removed old compasses and installed new Silvas. Replaced all of the hatches. Re-roped the skegs, yes they’re old rope skegs (pain in my butt sometimes) and added a new seat in the Pintail. The Chimp pump on the Skerray is actually in really good shape, surprisingly, I 303’d the rubber and plastic and tested it out with some water in the cockpit. Worked great! They’re not done done, but worthy enough for short paddles around the area. This summer I’ll go ahead and finish them up, repairing one spot on the side seam and a few small personal preference things.

This is how they looked when I first got them, relevant to this thread

These are them now and the Pins first day out in a while, not relevant to this thread
