It is basically
what is mostly done here. And as for it being irrelavant, it has enough entertainment value to keep you coming back for more.
Or is it that you are on a mission to save all the newbies out there from our fatal doses of bad advice? Either way, it either entertains you or gives you a sense of mission and so has value.
Entertainment value
>Either way, it either entertains you or gives you a sense of mission and so has value<
what else but entertainment that drives “experts” here to give their “advice”??? They get nothing in return by advicing newbies. Yep! Entertainment is IT!
And the “mission” wouldn’t have existed had there not be for some of those “bad advice”!
I think you are right in both counts.
Return?
I get that and more on the water.
I’l l break it down for those whomight
not get the point en passant.
Eskimos (inuit and other folks native to the arctic) would not have concieved of a sot because their indigenous culture did not include dry suits. That's why comming out of the boat was tantamount to suicide.
So the argument that if sot's were any good eskimos would have used the is not so valid.
In no way was I putting down their kayak culture.
Exactly my point
The “return” for being out on the water comes from the water. So why do so many come to a discussion board NOT to seek advice, but to GIVE?
I won’t try to analyze why people take their time to “help” when the help weren’t be returned (as in most the “virtual community”). But on this board, entertainment is definitely a big component for the participants.
Not Just A “Virtual” Community
and there is a “return.” I’ve paddled with ScottB, Brian N, Angstrom, PeterK, Raddog, Tsunami Chuck (who sat outside the Santa Cruz Break with me). I’ve met Pam (Santacruzmidwife)and 'Cuda. I received free Riot fins from Joemess. Got inspired to surf more from Seadart. Heard about NSPN, Santa Cruz, Walden Pond Scum, NHAMC ww paddlers from here and led me find those clubs and meet/paddle with folks in real life from those various clubs/groups. Heard of other forums where I got hints and encouragement to whittle “twigs” and build a “SOF.” I am getting online/offline advice on a Surf S&G. I have gotten in on group buys for sealable nylon and neoprene at much reduced prices…
I have gotten a lot from this forum primarily and others secondarily. I am sure I have also forgotten other stuff as well. Yes. There is entertainment here. I offer input here and there. If it helped someone, fine. If they don’t think so, that’s fine too. This aspect is not even close to all that I come to this forum for.

No, not at all the same point at all abc
I don’t find the the people who help me to be looking for any payback, and I certainly don’t post suggestions/comments expecting a return either.
“So why do so many come to a discussion board NOT to seek advice, but to GIVE?” What sort of question is that?! It has to go both ways or not at all. I’m glad it does. Nobody needs a list of unanswered questions or static statements.
Why not share your thoughts on something you enjoy? Why not pass along an answer to a question you know?
I think most of us just put things out there in the spirit of discussion/sharing and let people do with it what they will. Acccept/reject/use/abuse/enjoy/annoy/agree/disagree - whatever.
It’s not the end result that matters here - it’s the process and interaction.
Face It. We ARE Obessed
Some of us are obessed. I think about kayaking all the time.
I have a tedious job that requires 8 hours a day staring at a computer screen, and I can only write so much technical stuff without a break. It is entertainment.
I do think I have learned a lot. Especially, from some who have disagreed with my advice in the past. It makes me think things out.
I do hope some of my advice as been helpful.
I found this board shortly after it came online. I had a 9’ Frenzy and I played in the surf, and took it fishing in the Sierras. Always by myself. Not that I have progressed much past that point, but the people I have met on this board have opened my mind to doing more…
Seems like a waste
to learn something and not share it.
Sisson Kayaks,
I love some of those boats, and I try not to go too often to its web-site in order to not to buy one :D
"In a society so hung up on egalitarianism and anti-intellectualism few respect the value of hard earned skills and learning"
I fully agree with that. My point is that we can't generalize "SOT" or "Sink" as we usually do. To me, Sot or Sink means "deck and seat" distribution, that is all. Every kayak has its advantages and disadvantages, and every paddler should master the skills his/her boats required.
Therefore, I don't believe that everyone one that paddles a Sea Kayak is a Sea Kayaker, as well as, I don't believe everyone that paddles a Sot is someone unwilling and uncapable of rolling and/or learning new skills. Everthing is a matter of choices.
Personally, I enjoy paddling Sot quite a bit, and I wouldn't change I SoT "Sea Kayak" for Sink "Sea Kayak," but it does not mean I haven't paddle a Sink or that I won't do it in the future. Sometimes, next year, I will bring home a ICF K1 :D

"Virtual Community"
I have also had the pleasure of meeting/paddling with several p.nets. It goes beyond the net.

I’m on a computer most of the day too. Tends to skew the amount of responses up when I’m using it as an escape from work.
I have learned a lot too (and a lot about what I still want to learn), and have been exposed to a lot of things faster than I ever would have paddling mostly on my own. Definitely agree with the more open mind aspect.
I’ve never felt pressure here to learn certain things or use specific gear (as some seem to complain). I just found more to be interested in and try than I’d known before, and while I was fine on my Tarpon SOT - I’m VERY glad I looked at other options too. Whether you call it “progression” or “experimentation”, it has increased my paddling enjoyment greatly.

Maybe now some of you will see why I may be on both sides of some “classic” issues! Sorry, only kayaks though. I haven’t paddled a canoe since summer camp in the 70s, so I don’t reply to canoe threads.
WHERE DID D-NICE GO

D-nice got instant service
I answered his question fully and succintly in a single sentence two minutes after he posted it, so he didn’t need to stick around for the bull session.
Yep, credit where credit is due,…
… and some additional kudos to all involved are in order. Why? There were 6 reasonable posts made in a row - and the better part of a day went by before the usual verbosity ensued. A new record.
I purposely held off, seeing how long it would hold. Didn’t jump in until after the derailment.
Exceeds Skeg v Rudder
This thread has exceeded the current Skeg v Rudder thread and is one of the most heated I’ve read in a long time.
It Always Is
This subject always gets heated. Frankly, I get pretty heated about it in winter when I am not paddling.
When I am getting enough time on the water, it’s all good…
I Am Relaxed…
I’m going surfing tomorrow.

AND I AM NOT RELAXED
