Wildlife photo thread

Over the years I have sheltered in a Heiltsuk cabin in the Bardswell Group on the British Columbia Central Coast. It was built by the Band on a chief’s land. It was built as a shelter for use by Band members, as a cultural rediscovery site for Band youth and as a place where Band members who broke laws were “incarcerated” to reconnect with Band values while in isolation. When not serving the Heiltsuk people it is open for travelers in need of shelter. I have been in need of shelter 3 times while paddling in the area.

On my first two stays I encountered a mouse in the cabin who had terrorized guests long enough that he had been given the name “Joey-Walks-with-White-Feet” by previous people who had stayed in the cabin and who made note of his presence over the years in the cabin’s log.

I caught this photo of him as he was planning one of his vicious attacks on us.

Thank you. Nothing so remote, just the suburban lake I live on, near Orlando.

This Heron flew towards me and landed no more than 6’ from me.

This was fun to watch. This guy climbed onto this small rock to get a better view for fishing (or he was just trying to get his feet out of the cold water!) Karluk River, Kodiak, Alaska.

A Timber Rattler swimming on Lake Jocassee, SC. Taken by a close paddling friend. Some of the barrier Islands off GA have high numbers of Eastern Diamondbacks. They have been seen swimming in saltwater in many coastal areas.

Wolf Spider, Errol NH on the Magalloway River. I got the ID talking with a guy at the campground who was showing an interesting bug he caught. He says they can actually catch and eat fish, and uhhh, hang out around boat docks!

Sorry about ruining your life…

We’re pretty sure it is a juvenile Common Merganser with a crayfish as its catch. Lake Umbagog NH.

NTP, those are also known as dock spiders. I had one the size of a coffee saucer fall In my canoe on the Edisto when I went through some brush. Spiders aren’t my thing, so I shood her up to my bow paddler. She picked the spider up and flipped her overboard. I say her because she had an egg case in her fangs. BIG FANGS! But she was only interested in saving the next generation.
